How safe is Houston Texas?
I am moving to houston in January for approximately 1 year. I have never been to the USA but have lived and worked in many many countries. One of my favorite activities has been exploring by foot cities like Seoul, London, Dublin, Rome, Milan, Singapore, Bangkok, Sydney, Paris, Kuala Lumpur etc, is it possible to do this in Houston without being mugged, assaulted or killed. I have never lived or travelled to a country where guns are freely available and this is one of the main reasons I have not travelled to the US. Any advice will be gratefully received.
there are only certain parts of the city that are walking friendly’..
everywhere else is just people trying to get or come home from work.
houston may not be the biggest city as far as population goes but it is the largest as far as size goes so yeah…your feet will hurt.
the bad areas are closer to the main downtown area near its convention center and i-10 freeway. nicer area is around its zoo and outdoor theater is at. but like i said houston is huge so there are different places to go and see.
houston is a working city..though they do have lots of entertainment
its not what you are going to see walking down sydney or paris.
just don’t be dumb about things and keep yourself aware on whats going on around you.
since you will be there…ask around and find a good tex-mex restaurant.
and visit the river walk in san antonio.

Yes, Houston is fairly safe.
Probably safer than many of the cities you listed.
Most of the people are very friendly.
I have lived here for over 40 years. I have explored all parts of the city and never been shot at. Just be careful and use common sense and you will be fine.

Dude, you won’t be able to explore Houston by foot.
Why? Because it is too large. To put it in perspective, think 1600 square kilometers for the City of Houston and over 6000 square kilometers for the Greater Houston area.
There are plenty of things to see here and do here, but you’ll need a car. Period.
We also have a large Korean community.
Why do you fear guns? Baffling.

On forbes.com Houston, was one of the most safest, one of the most liveable, and one of the most friendly. So. Houston is pretty great.
Houston is much safer than most of the cities you just listed, so you’ll be good.
Houston is 4th largest by land and population in the US. So, by FOOT? I don’t think so. Unless you want to be super sore. But public transportation-yes.
Uhm, guns aren’t freely available?
And Houston is a VERY diverse city(one of the many things that make Houston so great). So, don’t worry about being the odd one out or anything.

there are so many people in the city of houston, that i dont think anyone will do anything stupid, like try killing you or something. just dont hang around in the alleys. haha.
i dont know, i think its safe.
im in highschool, and i have had things stolen, but that might just be because of the immature teens.

houston is dangerous. it depends on what part of houston you at. but then again, its dangerous everywhere, this city just so happens to have a higher crime rate than others….

I’ve lived in several of the cities you mention and feel much safer in Houston!
Not much walking though. A few areas like West U & Mid Town are walkable, otherwise, expect to spend a lot of time in as car.

Safe as anywhere else. People from Houston try to make it sound really unsafe though so they can sound like they have it tough or something.
